We have collected all recommendations from travellers who have visited these places, so there is a mix of places to get inspired with; villages, cities and even a mountain hut!
Ascona
Canton: Ticino
Located in the stunning sunniest canton of Switzerland, Ascona is a small village situated right on the Northern lake side of Lake Maggiore. Ascona is very photogenic with lots to see and do, so it’s a place you can definitely spend at few days at! Whether you wish to enjoy a 20 minute boat ride to the beautiful botanical gardens (Brissago Islands) for the day, go swimming in the lake, or hike up to the local viewpoint for picturesque views – there is something for everyone.
The view along the Ascona promenade is gorgeous to sit and relax at. There are many restaurants, all ideal for sitting outside under the summer parasols for a bite to eat or a fresh cold drink. They all have an Italian style and dishes, since being so close to the border of Italy. A personal recommendation a restaurant is Ristorante Al Pontile.

Zermatt
Canton: Valais
One of the best locations to visit in Switzerland in 2023 is Zermatt.
The small mountain village, in the south of Valais, borders Italy and is best known for the world-famous Matterhorn. Due to the high mountains surrounding the tourist resort and the many activities it offers in summer and winter, Zermatt is worth a visit at any time of the year.
Although the village is quite small, there are hikes, mountain lakes and many other activities for at least a week to discover. The main sight is, of course, the Matterhorn, towering high above Zermatt and best seen from the Gornergrat viewing platform. The 30-minute train ride from Zermatt alone is a memorable experience. Arrived at 3100m, there are over 20 four-thousand-meter peaks, in addition to the impressive Matterhorn and the Gorner Glacier to admire. Gornergrat is of course the perfect start or end point for fantastic hikes in the area.
Another highlight is the Matterhorn Glacier Trail, an approximately 2-hour hike, just below the Matterhorn. The themed trail leads through an unreal world of ice and stone and the legacy of the glacier.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, at 3883m.a.s.l. is the highest mountain station, in the largest summer ski area in Europe and is open year round for skiers. Here is the highest glacier palace in the world, with walkable crevasse.
After exiting days in the surrounding mountains, you can stroll through the little car-free village streets in the evenings and enjoy the Valais specialties such as cheese fondue.

Lugano
Canton: Ticino
For some gorgeous summer sun in Switzerland, head to the beautiful location of Lugano. Located in the Southern canton Ticino, Lugano is the perfect place to be to soak in some sun for one of the best locations to visit Switzerland in 2023. Average temperatures in the summer such as in August are 28°c but can totally get hotter!
As well as enjoying time shopping in the car-free center, find yourself walking along the promenade next to Lake Lugano. Here you can walk all the way along the water’s edge from the base of Monte San Salvatore to Monte Bre.
Both of these mountains are also reachable by local funiculars to the top, providing stunning views of Lugano from above. You can hike many routes around each mountain or back down to the bottom if you wish. Perfect for those who like exploring outside and not afraid of heights.
For more fun activities, get yourself out onto the water with either a boat tour of the area (or to the next city) or with a boat rental for you, friends or with a loved one to enjoy. You can also rent pedal boats from many locations which is great fun!
Finish a long Summer day with something local to eat or drink outside at one of the many delicious Swiss-Italian inspired restaurants, which all sell a delicious pizza or pasta. Then relax on one of the famous red benches for watching the sunset. A perfect end to the day!
Definitely a must visit Switzerland in 2023!

Basel
Canton: Basel-Stadt
Located at the North West of the country, Basel is a great city to visit all year round. The city is situated on the border of France and Germany, making it very international for locals. You can even visit the 3 point border at Dreiländereck with a local tram! This combined with the city makes it a great place to visit Switzerland in 2023.
The city is well known for its architecture, such as with the Basel Town Hall at the main market square. When in use, the Cantonal Parliament as well as the Cantonal Government use this building for meetings. But when not in use, you can have guided tours here and enjoy the beautiful building, statues and paintings inside at certain times.
When the weather is sunny, head out on to the river for a local boat cruise. These are a great way to explore the city by water, hearing the guide share what you see along the way. Afterwards you can also consider doing a free local walking tour through the local neighbourhoods while combining the trip with one of the many museums.
Else for something more local, visit the University’s Botanical Gardens. It’s a very pretty location full of many plants and and greenhouses that you can explore at your own time. It is free to visit and you can spend as much time as you wish, even to sit in the gardens on the benches provided. It’s located in the city centre so easy to walk to between other activities.

Cabane de Moiry
Canton: Valais
One of the best ways to enjoy the spectacular Swiss Alps is by spending time in one of its fantastic high altitude mountain huts. These wonderful “cabanes” vary from quite basic to extremely comfortable but almost always feature amazing mountain views.
And one of the best of them is gorgeous Cabane de Moiry in the Valais region. Famously located right next to the dramatic Moiry Glacier, it boasts some of the most incredible views of any hut in the country. It is understandably popular with hikers and mountain climbers in summer and skiers in winter.
Taking full advantage of the impressive location, the dining room has huge floor to ceiling windows looking straight out onto the glacier and there is also a large terrace with views of the glacier, Grand Cornier peak, the surrounding mountains and all the way back down the valley to brilliant blue Lac de Moiry.
The only way to reach Cabane de Moiry is on foot (although there is a helicopter pad for supplies and emergencies). The shortest route is from Lac de Chateaupre via a difficult and rocky 3.5 km hike with 500 metres of elevation gain that takes most people 1.5-2 hours. However, most people visit Cabane de Moiry as a stop along the phenomenal Walker’s Haute Route, a two-week trek from Chamonix to Zermatt that is considered one of the best long-distance hikes in Europe.
Most people spend just one night in the hut but if you have extra time there are enough different hikes in the area to occupy several days.

Interlaken
Canton: Bern
Interlaken is located between two beautiful blue lakes (Interlaken means “between lakes”) in central Switzerland. The town is surrounded by impressive snow-capped mountain tops. With clear weather, you have a great view of the famous 4158-meter-high Jungfrau mountain. It’s the gateway to the Jungfrau Region, with some of the highest mountain tops in the Swiss Alps.
Visiting the Jungfrau region is also one of the highlights of visiting Interlaken, especially during the summer months. Those are the best months to go hiking, and there are hundreds of fun hiking trails in and around the city. Just follow one of the yellow signs (there are literally everywhere) and start your hiking adventure! If you’re up for the challenge, be sure to hike up to Harder Kulm. This is a mountain next to Interlaken. From the viewpoint at the top, you have an amazing view of the town and the lakes.
Another amazing thing to do in Interlaken is to take a boat trip over the lake called Brienzersee to the town of Brienz. During the boat cruise that takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, you’ll be amazed by the clear blue water. And from the lake, you also have an amazing view of the surrounding mountains.

P.s for a fun event held at Brienz, check out the Axalp Air Show with the Swiss Air Force! A fun place to visit Switzerland in 2023!

Nendaz
Canton: Valais
Nothing compares to the beautiful Swiss Alps. Nendaz, a small ski resort town up in the mountains, is popular for both winter and summer activities. Even the drive up the winding mountain road from Sion is a beautiful initiation to the area’s spectacular views.
In the summer and fall, there are great hikes leaving from town. Several of the trails in the region follow along the “bisses,” or old waterways, in and out of small villages and farms, through the hills and forests. The ski lift to Tracouet’s Black Lake provides another panoramic perspective and more hiking trails.
The vacation rental options in Nendaz are abundant, although many of the hotels close in shoulder season (Fall). Staying in Haute (“high”) Nendaz not far from the Tourist Office is best for easy access to restaurants, grocery stores, bus stops, and the ski lift.
It’s recommended to stay at least two nights in Nendaz. It can also be a great week-long holiday destination as a base for day trips to destinations like Sion, Martigny, Zermatt and even places a little further like Spiez, Interlaken, and Bern.
No matter the season, sunscreen, good shoes, and layered clothing are highly recommended packing list items when visiting Nendaz. This wonderland is best enjoyed outdoors!

Bern
Canton: Bern
If you love getting lost in cobblestone streets surrounded by beautiful medieval architecture, look no further than Bern. Switzerland’s fifth-largest city is absolutely picture-perfect — aside from getting lost in the Old Town’s lovely cobblestone streets, you can’t miss wandering by the glistening blue Aare River — it almost doesn’t look real on a bright and sunny day.
Year-round Bern offers a variety of activities, but summer allows visitors to really enjoy its beauty. Beginning in late spring, don’t miss a stop at the enchanting Rosengarten. It is home to over 400 types of roses, irises, and many kinds of rhododendrons! The garden is perched atop a hill, making this a great spot not far from the city center to capture panoramic views.
A second spot for gorgeous views and to get your heart rate up is Bern’s little mountain Gurten. Even if you only have one day in Bern (try and plan for at least two days), you shouldn’t miss this! The hike is only about an hour long and takes you through open meadows filled with cows and into shady woods. At the mountain summit, you’re rewarded with stunning city views. If you don’t have time for a hike, you can also take the funicular for 11 CHF (round-trip).
After the hike, head back to Old Town to enjoy the city’s growing vegan food scene — you’ll even find vegan-friendly hotels in Bern!

Lauterbrunnen is a village located in the Lauterbrunnen valley in the Bernese Oberland. This village is a popular tourist hub, all thanks to its stunning position and unique alpine rock formation.
A major unmissable site is the Staubbach fall, which inspired the Lord of the Rings film makers. The Staubbach river falls 300 meters down the cliffs into the village, creating a stunning perspective for all those who venture up behind the waterfall.
