Sirmione is nestled on a narrow strip of land jutting out into the pristine waters of Lake Garda if you look on the map, the charming town of Sirmione is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Northern Italy. With its picturesque setting, rich history, and abundance of activities, spending a day in Sirmione is an experience that is sure to be unforgettable.
While we were leaving Lugano and heading to the Dolomites for our Winter snowboarding week away, we wanted to have a nice long lunch somewhere along the way. Based on the timing of a 5-6 hour road trip journey, we spontaneously picked a random spot on Lake Garda without any research. This ended up being at Sirmione!
A Day Trip From Lugano To Sirmione
From Lugano Switzerland to Sirmione Italy, the day trip route takes only 2 hours 50 minutes (one way) which is 208km in total. This is of course by car and without traffic. The highway takes you first via Como down towards Milan, which is partially paid toll road. Then you continue towards Bergamo and Brescia, which is the main E70 highway towards Venice. You can pay with the toll booths with both card or EUR cash.
The weather in Sirmione is very Mediterranean, even during Winter. We visited during January and experienced clear blue skies and temperatures of +14°c. It can get cold and very hot, so it’s best to check the weather before visiting so you also know what to wear during the day in Sirmione.
Where to park in Sirmione?
We decided to park at: Parcheggio Monte Baldo – address: Piazzale Monte Baldo, 25019 Sirmione BS, Italy. This is a paid parking location right the southern start area of the village of Sirmione. This parking is huge, and was empty during our visit during January.
There are other paid parking areas available along the land towards the village, such as at Lungolago Diaz Parking Area. This one seemed to be the closest to the entrance of the village, but also with limited amount of spaces. So on a busy day, we suggest just going to the one we went to first.

Grottoes of Catullus
Known locally in Italian as Grotte di Catullo, this historical landmark of Sirmione is a Roman villa. It was built between the end of the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD. The ruins of the villa has a rectangular plan and measured 167 m × 105 m.
This is not only recommended for those who love history, but for those who also want to enjoy beautiful views out onto Lake Garda. The scenery is so pretty here and well worth a wander.

Fun fact: The ruins was used in one of the scenes of the film ‘Call Me by Your Name’, filmed in 2017.

Archaeological Museum
Sirmione’s Archaeological Museum was inaugurated in 1999 and is located within the archaeological site of the Grottoes of Catullus. The museum is home to many artefacts related to the history of Sirmione and Lake Garda, objects from the ancient pile-dwelling sites surrounding the Sirmione peninsula and numerous testimonies of the Roman and Medieval periods found in Sirmione.
We didn’t have time to visit, but definitely on our list for next time!
Entrance Bridge – Ponte Levatoio di Sirmione
At the very entrance of the village, you will need to pass over the Ponte Levatoio di Sirmione. This is the main bridgeway and entrance to the rest of the village. The bridge itself is very stable, and lined with flowers on each side. It’s very photogenic with the local houses to the right and the castle to the left. Well worth a photo here!
From here, there are also a few boat companies where you can enjoy a tour on the lake! Some last only for 1 hour, with others much longer. So check them out if you’re interested!

Wander The Old Town
Put on some comfortable sneakers or shoes to walk around the old town of Sirmione. This lovely inner centre of the village is car free, with a few cobblestone streets and tiny alleyways that you can get lost in.
It’s also very nice that you can walk from right to left, or left to right, and end up at Lake Garda both ways. It’s such a short distance between each side that you can do this (in the centre) within 3 minutes walking!
If you can, visit when the stores are open here. Some of them looked to have some pretty unique items to buy but they were partially closed during our day trip. We saw some nice stores for clothing, bags, souvenirs, locally made items, Christmas decorations (since we visited around this time) and jewellery. We’re sure there are more items and stores you will see too!
The Scaligero Castle
The Scaligero Castle, which was built after the middle of the fourteenth century, is one of the main attractions you can visit in Sirmione. It was last restored in 1919, which you can today experience yourself by visiting. The visit to the castle would allow you to explore the courtyard, inner walkways and the harbour area. There is also the tower that you can climb to the top. The views from here are stunning on a sunny day!
We could see it was definitely a highlight based on many others heading straight into the castle when we arrived. For the history, read here before your visit else you can find out more during the explorations inside!
This castle is a paid activity in Sirmione and you can pay at the entrance on the day of your visit.

Visit The Sirmione Thermal Baths
Relax and rejuvenate in the natural thermal waters of Sirmione, known for their therapeutic properties. The Terme di Sirmione spa offers various wellness treatments and facilities.
We can suggest to visit Terme Catullo during a day in Sirmione if you have time. For a maximum of 5 hours (set by them), its the perfect location for relaxation. It is a little pricey for some, and we did not try this ourselves. However it looks just as enjoyable as other local spas near Lake Garda, so we would definitely consider it next time we visit.
Tips from other travellers about Terme Catullo: Bring your own footwear, shower toiletries and make a reservation in advance for your visit.
Relax On A Boat Tour
Sirmione is a great place to step onto a boat and enjoy a tour around the peninsula. Even during our visit in Winter there were a few time slots to take a boat tour throughout the day, easy to combine with visiting on a day trip. You could sign up in advance to book a slot, else to check on the day if they have any availability!
This is something we’d love to try next time we are in Sirmione. The waters surrounding the village were crystal clear, and experiencing this from a boat for an hour would be very relaxing and enjoyable.
Fun Fact: We flew our drone around the lake nearby and saw even a turtle in the water! How cool is that!

Eat Italian Icecream In Sirmione
No visit to a location on Lake Garda would be complete without enjoying some local Italian ice cream.
There are many places to get ice cream in Sirmione, but we can recommend Cremeria Bulian. They have all the favourite choices as well as some ones we had never seen before. The staff serving were very friendly and for the price, you get a good amount! Just perfect.
Watch The Sunset
If you stay long enough on your day trip, you can consider watching the sunset from Sirmione. A sunset watching suggestion is the perfect to end the day in Sirmione. Watching the sunset is always a great idea in our opinion, especially on a warm Summers night.

Lunch Recommendation in Sirmione
For the place-to-be for burgers, head to Il Vicolo. We had a really delicious meal here for our lunch, where we enjoyed both the ‘lady burger’ with beef and the chicken burger. Both with fries and sauces. Delicious!
The place is really small, with space inside for around 20-25 people in total. We arrived early when they had opened up for lunch, but in no time it was full and people were still coming in to make reservations. So it seemed like a popular location for lunch!
