A Winter Stay At Gasthaus & Hotel Berninahaus

Zoe| Grisons+ Swiss Hotel Reviews

During the winter holidays, we stayed at Gasthaus & Hotel Berninahaus for 1 cosy night. Surrounded by snow topped mountains and with scenic views of the valley, staying at Berninahaus hotel in Pontresina was perfect. This post shares our personal experience, staying in a double room with private bathroom and about the delicious dinner and breakfast buffet here. Get inspired with our photos and book your stay there too!

Gasthaus & Hotel Berninahaus

The 3-start Berniahaus Hotel is located within the Bernina Pass of Switzerland, which leads over the border to Italy. Built in 1515, the hotel building was lovingly fully renovated in 2006 and it now has up to 24 rooms and a beautifully designed restaurant.

In warmer weather, you can visit and enjoy the hotel, relax outside on their terrace and sleep the night away dreaming of the mountains nearby.

In colder weather, it’s the perfect cosy hotel to sleep in, warm up and plan your snowy adventures in the valley.

Address: Bernina Suot 3, CH-7504 Pontresina

Check In

The entrance was welcoming with little lights along the building, which was nice since it was already dark. Checking in was very efficient, welcoming and everything was clearly communicated. We arrived around 4pm and the room was ready from 3pm already if we had arrived earlier.

They have plenty of parking on site right outside, which is free and used by both hotel and restaurant visitors. While checking in, we reserved a table for dinner last minute too, which they were very happy to squeeze us in as hotel guests.

For 1 night in a double room, we paid 270 CHF total. This included the room, buffet breakfast and their facilities. This we will was a great price for the area during winter time, and a good price on average based on other Swiss hotels and unique stays we have experienced in Switzerland.

The Room

We booked a double room for our stay, which included a double bed and private bathroom with a shower. This was very cute and cosy, with a full wood style design, two little windows facing out to the mountains and plenty of space.

The bathroom was spacious, with a sink, toilet and a large shower. This was nice and the shower was strong, with no issues of hot water for such place.

The lighting in the room was very soft, warm and perfect to relax in.

The beds were very comfy, and after a long day of exploring St Moritz and the valley, we were knackered. The room temperature was regulated and we were neither hot nor cold for our night in the room.

There were coffee facilities inside the room too, but we didn’t use these personally.

We also had two windows, looking out towards the snow topped mountains. We could also see the panoramic Bernia Express famous red train pass by a few times before midnight. Though we did keep the windows closed as it was about -4c during our night’s stay. The trains you could not hear with the windows closed, with the hotel having good insulation from the temperatures outside.

Dinner at Hotel Berniahaus

We were very happy to have made a dinner reservation here last minute. The menu had a good range of options, and the two dishes we picked were absolutely delicious.

I had the spaghetti, which was with dried tomatoes, pine nuts and burrata cheese. Absolutely delicious, so much so that if we are ever back in the region, I would go back just for this. David took the salmon option, with vegetables and a side of french fries. Yum!

We both also enjoyed a red and a white wine with our meals, both which were recommended by the waiter and went perfectly with the meals.

The dinner was so good, that we have no photos at all from dinner.

In terms of price, we paid around 100 CHF total for dinner for 2 people, which included bread, the two main dishes, wine and side dishes. We felt this was great for the quality!

Breakfast And Check Out

The next morning, we headed down to breakfast at 7:30am as we were making an early start to the day of more exploring. The breakfast buffet was richly filled with fruits, yogurts, muesli, breads, spreads, cold meats and cheese, hard boiled eggs and more.

There was of course also coffee, teas, juices, water, hot chocolate and milk for those wanting a drink.

Summary

For 1 night away from Lugano, this we felt was the perfect location. Since we were visiting St Moritz, this was just a short drive away through the scenery of the Swiss mountains, with free parking, warm hospitality and the most delicious dinner and breakfast options.

We would definitely recommend sleeping here for at least 1 night while travelling in the area. It’s a beautiful spot, great also for those also wanting to hike in summer or ski in winter. This hotel is a short distance also from the local Diavolezza gondola, which also has a restaurant at the top!

IF you wish to visit and sleep at the Berniahaus Hotel like we did, check their Booking page here for full information, latest prices and room availability.
