Autumn Hikes in Ticino: 13 Beautiful Routes To Explore

Zoe| Hiking+ Ticino

There is something particularly special about hiking in Ticino during autumn. The summer crowds begin to disappear, the temperatures become much more comfortable for walking, and the forests slowly transform into a mixture of golden yellow, deep orange and red.

While Ticino is famous for its lakes, palm trees and Mediterranean atmosphere, autumn is when you can really see another side of the canton. From quiet mountain trails and colourful forests to dramatic valleys, alpine lakes and panoramic peaks, there are plenty of places to explore once summer is over.

If you are looking for autumn hikes in Ticino, these are some of our favourite routes to consider. I have personally explored many of these trails and have written separate guides about them, so you can follow the links for more detailed route information, photos and tips.

Why hike in Ticino during autumn?

Autumn can be one of the best times of year for hiking in Ticino.

The weather is generally cooler than during the summer, making uphill sections much more enjoyable. The forests are also at their most colourful, while the higher mountains can provide incredible views across Ticino and towards Italy.

Another advantage is that many popular summer hiking areas become much quieter. You may find yourself walking through a forest or mountain valley with barely anyone else around.

However, autumn also means shorter days and more unpredictable mountain weather. Higher-altitude routes can become cold very quickly, and snow is possible on some of the highest trails later in the season. Always check the weather and trail conditions before setting off.

Here are some of the best routes to add to your autumn hiking list.

Autumn in Switzerland

1. Capanna Quarnei – Valle Malvaglia

If you want to experience a true autumn mountain hike, Capanna Quarnei should be high on your list.

Located at around 2,107 metres in the Alto Valle Malvaglia, the route takes you from Cusie through forests, alongside the river and towards the mountain hut. I particularly enjoyed this hike during autumn because the trail through the forest was filled with orange and yellow trees.

The route from Cusie is around 1.5 hours each way, with approximately 450 metres of elevation gain. The trail is rated T2 and includes a mixture of forest paths, alpine terrain and open mountain scenery.

The hut itself makes a great destination, with panoramic views across the valley.

2. Valle Verzasca: Sonogno to Ponte dei Salti

The Valle Verzasca is beautiful throughout the year, but autumn gives the valley an entirely different atmosphere.

This 13.4km route starts in the traditional village of Sonogno and follows the Verzasca River downhill towards Ponte dei Salti. Along the way, you will pass waterfalls, stone houses, forests, bridges and plenty of places to stop beside the river.

The route takes around 3 hours 40 minutes without breaks and loses approximately 440 metres of elevation.

One of the best things about doing this hike in autumn is seeing the colourful trees reflected in the famous turquoise-green river.

The route can be shortened if needed, as there are bus stops along the valley.

3. Sentiero delle Meraviglie – Malcantone

For an easier autumn walk, head closer to Lugano and explore the Sentiero delle Meraviglie in Malcantone.

This circular route starts in Novaggio and takes you through forests, villages and along the Magliasina River. It is particularly enjoyable when the leaves begin changing colour.

The route is approximately 6.5–7km long, with around 200–220 metres of elevation gain. You can expect to spend roughly 2–3 hours here depending on how many stops you make.

Along the way you will discover historic mills, waterfalls and other reminders of Malcantone’s past, making this more than just a nature walk.

4. Monte Tamaro

Monte Tamaro is another fantastic choice for autumn, particularly if you want panoramic views without committing to an extremely long hike.

At 1,962 metres, Monte Tamaro is the highest summit between Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore. You can take the cable car to Alpe Foppa and then hike towards the summit.

The first section is relatively straightforward, but the final part becomes more rocky and requires more care. When I visited towards the end of October, the weather was still around 15°C, making it a fantastic autumn hiking day.

From the summit, you can enjoy 360-degree views towards Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno, Lake Maggiore and Italy.

5. Monte Boglia

If you are based around Lugano, Monte Boglia is one of the best autumn hikes to have on your list.

The summit reaches 1,516 metres and offers beautiful views across Lake Lugano and towards Italy. The route I followed started in Monte Brè and involved approximately 800 metres of elevation gain.

The full round route is around 12.2km and takes approximately five hours without stops, although shorter variations are possible.

Much of the route passes through forest, making it particularly atmospheric once the autumn leaves begin covering the trail.

6. Monte Generoso

Monte Generoso is another excellent option for an autumn day in Ticino.

One of the best things about this hike is that you do not necessarily need to hike all the way from the bottom. You can take the historic Monte Generoso cogwheel train from Capolago to the mountain and then explore the trails around the summit. It’s one of our favourite Autumn hikes in Ticino for the views!

At 1,704 metres, the mountain provides spectacular views towards Lake Lugano, the Alps and northern Italy.

You can also hike down towards Bellavista after enjoying the summit, turning the visit into a lovely combination of mountain railway and hiking adventure.

The forests around the mountain are especially beautiful during autumn.

7. Monte Lema

Sitting at 1,621 metres, Monte Lema is another fantastic autumn viewpoint in Ticino.

The mountain sits close to the Swiss-Italian border and offers sweeping views across both countries. You can take the cable car from Miglieglia and then choose from several hiking possibilities around the summit.

The combination of mountain scenery, forest paths and open ridgelines makes Monte Lema particularly attractive when the autumn colours start appearing.

On a clear day, you can see towards Monte Tamaro, Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore and the surrounding Alps.

8. Monti di Lego

For something shorter and more relaxed, consider hiking to Monti di Lego.

This 5.38km round trip takes around two hours and has approximately 360 metres of elevation difference. Much of the trail passes through forest, making it a lovely choice when you want to enjoy the autumn colours without spending an entire day on the mountain.

The reward at the top is a beautiful view across Lake Maggiore.

There is also the Capanna Grotto Monti di Lego, which is normally open between April and October, making an early autumn visit particularly appealing.

9. Cima di Medeglia

At 1,260 metres, Cima di Medeglia is not the highest mountain on this list, but it offers some seriously impressive views.

The trail combines woodland paths with open sections and old military pathways. From the summit, you can look towards Bellinzona, Locarno, Lake Maggiore, Lugano and the surrounding mountains.

It is also a relatively short hike, making it a good option for an autumn morning or afternoon when you don’t want to spend the entire day in the mountains.

The surrounding woodland is particularly enjoyable once the leaves begin changing colour.

10. Lago di Tremorgio and Lago di Leit

Finally, for those wanting a higher-altitude adventure, consider the hike from Lago di Tremorgio to Lago di Leit.

The route is approximately 7.4km and involves around 420–430 metres of elevation gain, reaching around 2,250 metres at its highest point. It’s one of most favourite Autumn hikes in Ticino when the weather is sunny!

You can take the Tremorgio gondola up from Rodi and begin the hike beside Lago di Tremorgio before climbing towards Lago di Leit.

I completed this hike in September and found the cooler conditions perfect for walking. However, this is one to check carefully later in autumn because of the higher elevation and potential for snow or difficult conditions.

11. Bedretto Valley

If you really want to see Ticino at its most colourful, head north to the Bedretto Valley. In autumn, the valley’s larch trees transform into spectacular shades of yellow, orange and gold, creating one of the most beautiful autumn landscapes in the canton.

The valley is surrounded by impressive alpine peaks, forests and mountain streams, and there are plenty of hiking possibilities to explore. The cooler autumn temperatures also make it much more enjoyable to tackle some of the uphill sections without the heat of summer.

One of the best things about hiking in Bedretto during autumn is the contrast between the colourful trees and the rugged mountains surrounding the valley. It is also a quieter time to visit, with far fewer people than during the busy summer months.

12. Nufenen Pass

For a more dramatic alpine landscape, head up to the Nufenen Pass, one of Switzerland’s highest paved mountain passes at 2,478 metres above sea level.

The scenery here is very different from the colourful forests of lower Ticino. Instead, you’ll find rugged mountains, rocky landscapes and wide-open alpine views stretching across the surrounding peaks.

Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to visit, especially early in the season when the higher mountains may already have a dusting of snow while the valleys below are still covered in autumn colours. From the pass, you can enjoy spectacular views towards the Bernese Alps and the Finsteraarhorn.

Because of its altitude, this is one to plan for early autumn rather than late in the season. Snow and cold conditions can arrive quickly at this elevation, so always check the weather and road conditions before setting off.

For Autumn hikes in Ticino, the Nufenen Pass has many routes both in the valley and at the top that you can consider. One route you could consider is to the Capanna Corno Gries.

13. Lago del Narèt

For a truly spectacular alpine autumn landscape, head to Lago del Narèt at the very end of the Vallemaggia Valley. Sitting at around 2,316 metres above sea level, this remote reservoir is surrounded by rugged mountains, smaller alpine lakes and wide-open scenery.

Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to visit, when the surrounding landscape begins changing colour and the cooler temperatures give the area a completely different atmosphere from the warmer valleys below. When I visited towards the end of September, the first autumn colours were already appearing, although it was surprisingly cold and windy at the top.

Lago del Narèt can be reached by following the mountain road from Fusio, and the area offers plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring. There are also several smaller lakes nearby, including Lago Superiore and Lago di Sassolo, so you can turn your visit into a longer mountain adventure if conditions allow.

Just remember that at this altitude, autumn can feel much more like winter. Temperatures can drop dramatically compared with lower down in Ticino, so definitely bring warm layers and check the conditions before setting off.

Tips for Autumn Hikes In Ticino

Before heading into the mountains, remember that autumn conditions can change quickly.

Bring layers rather than relying on one thick jacket, as you can start a hike in sunshine and find yourself in much colder conditions higher up. Good hiking shoes are also important, particularly when fallen leaves cover rocks, roots and uneven paths.

We would also recommend carrying enough water and snacks, checking the weather forecast and starting earlier in the day. The days become noticeably shorter as autumn progresses.

For higher routes, always check whether cable cars, funiculars and mountain huts are still operating for the season. Some services switch to reduced timetables or close completely after the summer season.

Finally, don’t forget your camera. These Autumn Hikes in Ticino are great to experience one of the most photogenic times of year, whether you’re photographing golden forests, mountain peaks, turquoise rivers or Lake Lugano surrounded by colourful hills.

Final Thoughts

From the palm-lined shores of Lugano to the high alpine valleys, autumn hikes in Ticino is ultimately a wonderful time of the year for exporing – without the crowds!

You don’t necessarily need to climb a 2,000-metre mountain to enjoy it either. Some of the most beautiful autumn scenery can be found on quieter forest trails and valley routes.

Whether you want a short afternoon walk, a panoramic mountain summit or a full-day adventure, there is an autumn hike in Ticino for you and your loved ones.

So grab your hiking boots, pack a warm layer and head into the mountains before winter arrives!
