If you’re looking for a place to chase the autumn vibes, your next adventure should be to the Bedretto Valley. The Bedretto Valley during Autumn has brightly orange larch trees, autumn foliage, a range of mushrooms, chestnuts, pinecones, clear turquoise rivers and the most beautiful little waterfalls you can explore. It’s one of the most beautiful scenic roads to drive in Ticino too!
Read on to see our Autumn photos from the Bedretto Valley, as well as tips for visiting and information on the village and some hikes in the area.

Where is the Bedretto Valley?
This valley is located in the very north of the canton of Ticino, connecting to Valais with the surrounding mountains and with the Nufenen Pass. The valley extends from Airolo at the foot of the San Gotthardo Pass too.
The Ticino canton of Switzerland has a lot of scenic valleys such as this one, but as this connects to Valais, it is definitely a more visitable location than the others which end up as a dead end. Such as the ValleMaggia District Valley and the Verzasca Valley.
The municipality consists of the main village as well as and the hamlets of Ronco, Villa and Ossasco, and forms part of the Leventina district.
Bedretto Village
What is good to know is that the main village in the valley is also called Bedretto. The village is picturesque and well worth a stop at, especially if you are into photography. The Cappella di San Giuseppe chapel is pretty to visit and photograph with the mountains in the background.
There is also a little restaurant and place to stay at called Osteria Bäkar. We have not been able to visit during our day there as they were closed, but their google rating shows 4.9 with what seems like fantastic reviews about the food and to stay here for the night. So we’ll make sure to stop here next time.
Facts about the Bedretto Village include:
- Village is based at 1,402 meters elevation
- Last recorded population was 110 residents with 12.2% being foreign nationals
- Italian, German and French is spoken here, with Italian as 1st language

Autumn Larch Trees in Ticino
Discovering the valley during Autumn is quite a special experience due to the beautiful larch trees. These tall, colourful trees during Autumn turn into a magical colour range of yellows, oranges, reds and then browns. Usually this lasts for about 2 weeks, with the weather playing an impact on how long they last for. So it’s not always 2 weeks!
For October 2024, these larch trees in Ticino turned the beautiful yellows and oranges around the 20th October. We then had a week of rain and then a week of sunshine. But the needles of the larches were already falling down on 27th October. So by the end of the 2nd week, many of the trees were more brown than any other colour.
There are many stopping locations for your car and bus stops if you take the public bus transportation here. Along the Eastern part of the valley, closer to the Nufenen Pass is where the trees become more forestry, dense, and more orange during our late October visit. But the whole valley is stunning, and well worth seeing it all.

Hiking In the Bedretto Valley
It’s a unique place within Ticino to visit, with many hikes and routes to discover that are not so popular (compared to more popular locations nearby in Ticino or Valais). So you may even be hiking all day without seeing more than 5 people!
For the hikes, we usually use free Komoot app to find some inspiration as well as checking the route expectations, elevation changes and lengths of the route. We also use the www.sac-cas.ch website for detailed information and planning.
One nice, easy but doable hiking route that is also enjoyable is to hike to Capanna Piansecco CAS, which is at 1,982 meters elevation. It’s a stunning route from the parking/bus stop area to the Capanna where you get to admire the amazing views through the valley. Heading up, it will take you around 1 hour only, with an elevation gain of 370 meters.
- Parking google maps location for the hike: FFPF+8F5, 6781 Bedretto
