Enjoy The Lugano Swiss National Fireworks From A Private Boat

Zoe| Ticino

Every year on 1 August, Switzerland celebrates its National Day with spectacular fireworks, live music, lakeside festivities, and celebrations all across the country. While watching the fireworks from the shore is always a memorable experience, there’s one way to make the evening even more magical – watching the firework display from your very own private boat.

Whether you’re visiting Switzerland or looking for a unique way to celebrate, hiring a private boat for Swiss National Day offers unbeatable views, a peaceful atmosphere, and memories you’ll never forget.

This post is based on renting a private boat for the fireworks in Lugano Ticino. This we did for 2026, where we first enjoyed the Switzerland National Day celebrations with explorations around the city throughout the day, followed by a private boat for the evening with fireworks!

Private boat for Swiss National Day

Watch Lake Lugano fireworks from a boat

Several Swiss lakes offer fantastic Switzerland National Day celebrations, but we focus this post on our experience in Lugano.

Lake Lugano is one of the most picturesque locations in southern Switzerland. Surrounded by mountains and elegant lakeside villages like Gandria and Morcote, the fireworks over the lake create an unforgettable setting. Watching them from the water offers a completely different perspective compared to the busy waterfront.

You will be surrounded by lots of other boats, but that makes it quite special too. Everyone is there to celebrate the national holiday together, with lots of cheering and music from other boats.

Why Watch the Fireworks From the Water?

On National Day, many of Switzerland’s lakes become the centre of the celebrations. Towns such as Lugano, Lucerne, Geneva, and Zurich host impressive fireworks displays that reflect beautifully across the water. This is great for everyone to see them best, along the lakeside promenades and of course from boats!

From a private boat, you can enjoy:

  • Uninterrupted panoramic views of the fireworks.
  • Escape from the large crowds lining the promenades.
  • A relaxing and intimate setting with family or friends.
  • The opportunity to enjoy dinner or drinks while waiting for the show to begin – since you can take what you like (as long as driver is not drinking!!).
  • Incredible photography opportunities without any buildings or people blocking the view.

It’s one of the most unforgettable ways to experience Switzerland’s biggest summer celebration.

Private Boat Rentals in Lugano

There are a few places we considered for the boat rental for us and our private friends in Lugano. These include:

Rezzonico Boat – Closest to the city centre

Location: Piazza Riziero Rezzonico 6900, 6900 Lugano

Boatcenter Palace Lugano SA – near the LAC museum

Location: Piazza Bernardino Luini 3, 6900 Lugano

Rivabianca S.A. – towards the north side of Parco Ciani

Location: Viale Castagnola 28, 6900 Lugano

For our rental for 2026, we booked the last boat from Rivabianca S.A. It was a boat for 5 people and costed 250 CHF for the rental. This was based on enjoying the boat from 19:30 to 23:30pm for the Swiss National Day evening.

When renting a boat, be sure to check:

  • Whether a boating licence is required (usually not the case for CH private boats as they don’t have much horsepower)
  • Maximum passenger numbers to fit your group!
  • Safety equipment provided onboard
  • Any special navigation rules during the fireworks display, such as making sure you do not get too close to the buoys or specific ways to drive the boat around

Book Early

Swiss National Day is one of the busiest evenings of the year for boat rentals. Demand is extremely high, particularly for self-drive motorboats and private charter boats.

If you’re planning to celebrate on the water, it’s worth booking several weeks in advance to secure your preferred boat. However, from our experience for 2026, we actually called to check availability 2 days before and they had 1 boat left – so actually lucky!!

Tip: With a boat, you can also consider renting for the whole day and visiting a few places around the lake, such as to Grotto San Rocco!

What to Expect

Most private boat rentals allow you to spend several hours on the lake, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere before darkness falls. Like our rental was possible for 4 hours!

Bring along a picnic, your favourite drinks, or even order takeaway from a local restaurant on board. As the sun sets behind the mountains, you’ll have front-row seats as boats begin gathering for the evening’s celebrations.

Once the fireworks begin, the reflections dancing across the calm water create an unforgettable spectacle that’s difficult to experience from land. Plus the noice is still echoing around the mountain peaks!

A Swiss National Day You’ll Never Forget

Watching Switzerland’s National Day fireworks from a private boat transforms an already special celebration into something truly unforgettable. With sparkling reflections on the lake, breathtaking mountain scenery, and front-row seats to the fireworks, it’s an experience that’s hard to beat.

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate 1 August, skip the crowded lakeside promenades one year and head out onto the water. Whether you’re celebrating with friends, family, or as a couple, enjoying the fireworks from a private boat is one of the most memorable ways to experience Swiss National Day.
