Exploring Lake Muzzano

Zoe| Ticino

With just a short distance from Lugano, you can find the beautiful scenic lake of Lake Muzzano. It’s a beautiful little lake, which we ourselves also walk around. It’s a peaceful spot not far from the city. And whether you’re an avid nature lover, a photographer, or just someone seeking a peaceful retreat, Lake Muzzano offers the perfect escape.

In this post, we will explore some fascinating facts about the lake, the types of wildlife you may encounter, and the various hiking opportunities around this stunning natural landmark.

Lake Muzzano

Lake Muzzano in Lugano

Facts

Here are a few facts about the lake:

  • Lake Muzzano, a small yet captivating lake, is situated in the Ticino canton of Switzerland, specifically in the municipality of Muzzano. It’s not that far from the center of Lugano.
  • The lake covers an area of about 1.3 square kilometers.
  • This lake is part of the Lake Lugano system, which forms part of the larger group of lakes like Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. However, you can see it’s a lot smaller.
  • Lake Muzzano is known for a relaxing setting, where you can sit at one of the many benches around and admire the lake and views. Last time we even saw someone here with a picnic – great choice too!
  • The lake itself is formed by glacial movements during the last Ice Age, much like other lakes in the region.
  • It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely walk or a quiet afternoon spent in the company of nature.

Hiking Around Lake Muzzano

One of the best ways to explore the beauty of Lake Muzzano is by hiking and walking around it.

The most popular route for visitors is the lakeside trail, a leisurely walk that takes you along the edge of the lake. The path is mostly flat and easy to walk, making it accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. Many also walk their dogs here. This route then takes you through a street of houses before reaching back at the lake in a circular route.

The trail is relatively short, and you can walk completely around the lake (with the north end via the street) within 1 hour. The route is only 4 km total. I suggest to walk it anti-clockwise for the best scenery views.

Like mentioned, we always enjoy a walk around the lake on a sunny day. It’s usually very peaceful and easy to sit at one of the benches around the lake too.

Tip: Sit at one of the many benches along the way for a break and enjoy a picnic. It’s very peaceful and beautiful on a sunny day.

Wildlife Around Lake Muzzano

One of the greatest appeals of Lake Muzzano is the abundance of wildlife that calls this area home. While the lake is relatively small, it supports a variety of animals, making it an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, and animal lovers.

Common sightings include ducks, swans, and geese, as well various species of migratory birds, especially during the spring and autumn months. You may even catch sight of birds of prey like buzzards, owls or hawks. If you’re lucky, you may see a kingfisher popping by.

The trees and shrubs that line the shores of the lake also provide nesting grounds for smaller songbirds, and it’s not uncommon to spot robins, sparrows, and warblers surrounding the lake.

In terms of fish, the lake is home to perch, bass, and trout. These species thrive in the clean, oxygen-rich waters of the lake.

Nearby the water’s edge you can also spot frogs and their newts.

Then, at dawn or dusk, you may spot squirrels, hedgehogs, and wild boars. There has also been sightings of foxes and deer.

The Hilltop Viewpoints

For those looking for a more challenging hike above the lake, the mountains surrounding the lake offer several more strenuous trails that provide stunning panoramic views of Lake Muzzano, Lake Lugano, and the surrounding region.

One of the most popular hikes is up to Monte San Salvatore, a mountain located nearby which you can see from Lake Muzzano. The summit offers incredible 360-degree views, and the hike up takes you through forested areas and along rocky paths.
