In this post, we share all that you need to know before visiting, including a bit of background, how to get there, prices, what you’ll see from the summit, activities, and about our own experience visiting the Weisshorn peak during our visit.

Exploring Weisshorn
Introduction & A Bit of History
The Weisshorn above Arosa shouldn’t be confused with the towering 4,500-meter Weisshorn in Valais, as this Weisshorn is more modest, topping out at around 2,653 meters, but offers an arguably more accessible and equally spectacular experience.
Arosa itself has been a mountain resort destination for well over a century, originally known as a health retreat thanks to its clean air and peaceful alpine environment.
The summit station and restaurant date back several decades and have been steadily upgraded over the years, making it a modern, comfortable viewpoint that still manages to feel welcoming and laid-back. The Weisshorn cable cars are part of Arosa Lenzerheide’s lift system, which is one of the region’s biggest attractions, and the area is beloved by locals and returning visitors for its combination of great skiing, reliable snow, and beautiful hiking routes.
For many travellers, the Weisshorn is the highlight of an Arosa trip because you get a genuine high-alpine experience without having to commit to a long hike or technical mountaineering. The gondola makes it a straightforward outing for families, casual travellers, and anyone who wants a “wow” moment with very little effort.

How to Get There & Prices
The journey to the Weisshorn begins in Arosa, which is accessible via one of Switzerland’s most scenic rail routes. If you’re lucky enough to take the Rhaetian Railway from Chur, you’ll enjoy a winding, dramatically beautiful ride that feels like a preview of what’s waiting at the summit.
Once in Arosa, the Weisshorn is reached via:
- Arosa → Weisshorn Middle Station (Weisshornbahn I)
- Middle Station → Weisshorn Summit (Weisshornbahn II)
They are in two parts, with you needing to change at the middle station to get to the Weisshorn peak. The gondolas run regularly throughout the day, with extended hours in the winter season to accommodate skiers and early risers. Both are also a very big gondolas, so there is plenty of space for all the visitors!
TIP: The Weisshorn middle station is a must-visit as well, as you can meet the Arosa Bears!!
Price to Reach the Weisshorn
Prices change depending on season, promotions, and weather conditions, so it’s worth double-checking officially on their website or at the ticket office.
For our own visit in October, our return tickets were 27 CHF per adult. They did not have any special deals for us using the SBB half fare card.
TIP: Throughout the year, if you are staying in one of the accommodations, you may be eligible for the free transportation cards. They provide this a few times with set dates, so check with your accommodation if it’s available before buying your Weisshorn tickets.

What You Can See From the Weisshorn Summit
Once you step out of the gondola at the peak, the first thing you’ll notice is how wide and open the panorama is. The Weisshorn is surrounded by dramatic 360° alpine scenery, and on clear days you can see far into the surrounding Graubunden mountains.
Key Views From the Top:
- The Plessur Alps, spread out like a rugged mountain amphitheater
- The Arosa valley, with its turquoise Obersee lake shimmering below
- Peaks of the Lenzerheide region, connected by the famous snow-sports network
- Countless ridgelines stretching toward Davos and beyond
- Sunrise and sunset views if you time it right!
Because the summit is quite exposed, the light changes quickly throughout the day. Photographers can get dramatic shadows in the morning and golden tones in the afternoon. In winter, the snow-covered peaks feel close enough to touch, while in summer the landscape turns deep green with wildflowers dotting the trails.

Activities: What to Do at the Weisshorn
1. Skiing & Snowboarding (Winter)
Arosa Lenzerheide is known for its smooth, scenic slopes, and the Weisshorn area is home to some very enjoyable intermediate terrain in the region. Skiers can enjoy long, winding runs from the summit down into the valley, with pistes that are well-groomed and usually quieter than those in Switzerland’s major ski hubs.
There are also freestyle options, freeride zones when conditions allow, and a few mountain huts nearby if you want to ski-to-lunch.
2. Snowshoeing and Winter Hiking
For non-skiers, the Weisshorn offers marked winter trails, which includes a stunning ridge walk near the middle station. Snowshoe rentals are easy to find in Arosa, and the paths are usually maintained throughout the winter season. This is one of the best ways to escape crowds and experience the mountain in silence.
3. Hiking (Summer & Autumn)
When the snow melts, the entire mountain becomes a paradise for walkers. Popular hikes include:
- Summit to Middle Station (with the Arosa Bear Sanctuary!): an easy downhill route with incredible views
- Arosa Squirrel Trail: an easy, mostly flat route to meet (and feed) the fluffy locals
- Weisshorn to Hörnli Hut: a longer, more adventurous day hike
- Ridge paths around the summit area: great for quick, scenic strolls
Many routes pass through alpine meadows filled with flowers, and if you’re lucky you may spot marmots sunbathing from Spring onwards, or mountain goats relaxing on the cliffs.

4. Dining at the Weisshorn Restaurant – 360° Panoramarestaurant Weisshorngipfel
At the top of the peak is the 360° Panoramarestaurant Weisshorngipfel restaurant.
Even if you’re not hiking or skiing while visiting, the restaurant alone is worth the trip. The terrace sits at the edge of the mountain with panoramic seating perfect for long, leisurely lunches. On the menu you can expect classic Swiss dishes, think rösti, soups, local cheeses, and pastries, plus a surprisingly good selection of wines and hot drinks.
During our visit, we enjoyed some Grisons specialty cheese and vegetarian spring roles and a plate of pasta. Since it was at the start of the winter season, we also enjoyed our first glühwein here!
Reservation is apparently recommended during the high seasons, especially on sunny days and on weekends. They also have special events throughout the year, so plan ahead and book!

Hotel Tip: Arosa Vetter Hotel
For those wanting to enjoy the Weisshorn Mountain by staying in the village of Arosa for longer than 1 day, we suggest staying at the Arosa Vetter Hotel. We stayed here for 1 night and it was absolutely perfect. The staff are very welcoming and the location is within 5 minutes to the gondola. They have a few different rooms available and all include the buffet breakfast. They also have an onsite restaurant, which was so delicious with seasonal dishes for the evening.

Final Thoughts: Is the Weisshorn Worth Visiting?
We think Absolutely!
We feel that the Weisshorn is one of those mountain destinations that feels special but not exclusive or overly touristic, it’s easy enough to reach, stunning enough to remember, and flexible enough for all kinds of travellers.

If you’re planning a trip to Arosa or the wider Graubunden region, put the Weisshorn near the top of your list. It’s one of those places that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and appreciate just how much beauty Switzerland has packed into its mountains.
