Rotenflue Day Trip: Views Of The Mythen Region

Zoe| Schwyz

While in the Mythen Region, take your next day trip to Rotenflue with the gondola for some fantastic views of the Swiss Alps. This mountain is part of the Schwyz canton of Switzerland and it’s a stunning location to visit all year round.

It stands at an impressive 1,571 meters in elevation and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and villages. The best way to experience Rotenflue is by taking a gondola ride, which will take you to the very top of the mountain.

Read on to see our experience and photos from our Winter day at the top of Rotenflue.

Views from the mountain at Rotenflue

Rickenbach to Rotenflue Gondola

The gondola ride itself is an experience to remember. As you ascend the mountain from Rickenbach, you will be surrounded by stunning views of the Alps and down to the villages below, such as to Ingenbohl and Fronalpstock. The gondola is equipped with large windows, providing an unobstructed view of the landscape. They all have a little window to open for fresh air as well, so if the bigger windows are a little dirty you can also take a photo via the open window area.

These gondola’s take only around 5 minutes to ascend to the top, starting at the bottom station called Rickenbach. There is a mid-point platform to get off at called Station Rätigs, else do stay on for the final stop at the top. Once you reach the top, you will be greeted with a stunning view of the panoramic restaurant and viewing platform right in front of you.

For the visit, make sure to check the official website to know if there are any issues. It’s possible that if a storm would be approaching or in bad weather conditions, the gondola would be closed.

Tip: There is parking at the gondola station, else good public transport connections here.

Rickenbach Gondola Prices

For our 2024 visit, the prices per adult was 21 CHF each for return ticket as this was with our Swiss half fare card. But if you do not have this, you can expect to pay this amount for one way only – making it 42 CHF total without the half fare card.

It’s a little pricey compared to other Switzerland gondolas in our opinion, but we still enjoyed the trip and would recommend heading up.

You can check for the most relevant prices online, with many options available if you are also visiting to ski during Winter.

Rotenflue Viewing Platform

The viewing platform is another highlight of the Rotenflue experience. It offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. On a clear day, you can easily see down to Ingenbohl, as far as Lake Lucerne and the famous Rigi mountain furthermore with Fronalpstock – which we slept the night at another time!. It is the perfect spot to take some stunning photos and capture memories that will last a lifetime.

Grand Tour of Switzerland Sign

At the viewpoint point, you can also find the Grand Tour of Switzerland sign facing towards the beautiful mountain of Grosser Mythen. When looking at the mountain, you’ll see a little building at the top which is a restaurant.

Activities At Rotenflue

Hiking From Rotenflue

For the more adventurous souls, there are several hiking trails that start from the top of Rotenflue. These trails vary in difficulty and length, so there is something for everyone, from beginners to experienced hikers. The trails will take you through lush green forests and offer breathtaking views of the Alps. The fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings will leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

Consider using an app to help with the hiking route of your choice, such as Kamoot. There is a free version you can use to find your way.

From our experience with hiking in the Ticino canton, do make sure to have the correct clothing and be prepared for any weather changes at the top of mountains. Even on a warm sunny day in the village, you may be cold at the top!

Paragliding

Another popular activity at Rotenflue is paragliding. Experience the thrill of flying over the Alps and take in the stunning views from a bird’s eye view. This unforgettable experience is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Rotenflue.

We didn’t see any paragliders during our Winter visit here, but we can imagine its most popular to do during the Spring and Summer!

Take A Picnic

For those seeking a more relaxing experience, there are plenty of benches and picnic areas scattered around the summit. So if you are visiting during a hot day with no snow, consider packing a picnic and enjoy the Swiss Alps while indulging in some delicious food. It’s the perfect way to unwind and connect with nature.

Of course we want to highlight that you need to take all your trash with you. Lets keep our Swiss mountains clean, pretty and 100% nature!

As you can see below, we didn’t take a picnic with all the snow around!

Restaurant Gipfelstubli

This Swiss style restaurant sits at the top of the gondola station at Rotenflue. They have panoramic views of the Alps while providing great food. The staff were very warm welcoming and very quick with our orders.

There was not too much choice on the menu, but that was perfect as the choices they did have was delicious. We personally chose the soup with bread and the schnitzel with fries and vegetables – yum!

Be sure to try the famous Swiss cheese fondue if you haven’t yet, a must-have dish while in Switzerland.

The restaurant was quite busy, but we were able to get a table inside since it was a little windy. But the outdoor terrace area looked great with the views and blankets.
