Since living in Lugano, we have had the enjoyment of seeing some amazing storms and we are very proud of the Lightning photos in Lugano that we have taken. Most times we have been very lucky to take the photos of course, since you cannot know when or where to expect the lightning strike.
Below we share out best photos of the lightning strikes in Lugano. These have all been taken with our Olympus branded cameras, while being stabilised on a tripod.

Storms In Lugano
Usually we have been experiencing storms after a hot Summers day, or when the heatwave temperatures finally dropped.
Thunderstorms are, as you may know, typically caused by the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air combined with the presence of atmospheric instability. So when warm, moist air near the Earth’s surface rises and encounters colder air aloft, it cools and condenses, forming clouds.
As the warm air continues to rise, it can create strong updrafts and downdrafts within the developing storm. These up-and-down motions can lead to the development of lightning, thunder, heavy rain, and even tornadoes in severe cases.
We have been lucky to experience some amazing storms in Ticino since living here. The photos below show Monte San Salvatore as the focus with the lightning surrounding the mountain.

We have a fully-loaded, high content Ticino Guide listing local things to see, do and explore with each season: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Lightning photos in Lugano
Here’s a collection of our stormy lightning photos in Lugano, taken by both of us.
Two of our favourite photos has been the following, taken 26th August 2023 just as the storm was passing over Lugano. This was at the end of a week long heatwave of 35 degrees, when the temperature dropped down to 22 after the storm.
