Sunset In Lugano: Best Places To Watch!
Here are our recommended locations to watch the sunset in Lugano, so that you can enjoy the sunset best. This is based on our local advise. We are living here for more than 1 year and have experienced the sunset from many places!
Located just a short 10 minutes from the city center of Lugano, Parco Ciani is lovely to spend time at all year round. When watching the sunset from Parco Ciani, the sun will reflect right off Lake Lugano, making it very special to watch with the city silhouette.
Tip: Take a blanket and watch from the stoney beach area at the very end of the park. You can also bring your own drinks/snacks to enjoy a sunset picnic.
Perfect for the sunset all year round, you wont be disappointed by standing at the viewpoint of Monte Bre. The sun sets to the South in winter, so if you were to stand at the top of Monte Bre, you can expect the sun to set right in front of you towards Monte San Salvatore and the city below. During Summer, the sunset in Lugano is more towards Monte Lema and Monte Tamaro instead. It’s a great advantage point all year round.
Tip: The restaurant is open till late during Summer, perfect for those wanting to have a dinner outside during sunset!
Parco San Michele
Lower down from Monte Bre is Parco San Michele. This park is small but perfect for those who don’t want to travel all the way up to Monte Bre. The park has a few red Lugano benches as well as a Grand Tour of Switzerland sign. The benches provide unobstructed views of the sunset in Lugano.
Tip: It’s a lovely little spot to also have a picnic for those wanting to watch the sunset during Summer.
Monte San Salvatore
From the peak of Monte San Salvatore, you can enjoy 360° views of Ticino and of course that means the sunset too! There is a restaurant that you can enjoy a sunset dinner at during warmer months, which is easily reachable with the funicular. Else for all year round you can take the stairs to the very top for the viewing platforms. There are quite a few to choose from depending on where the sunset will be.

Tips To Watch The Sunset In Lugano
It’s always good to be prepared, or at least try to be! The weather can of course change at any time!
Since Ticino is the most sunniest canton of Switzerland, there is usually a good chance to see the sun set for most of the year. However, do keep in mind that some sunsets can be much more special than others, such as when it’s actually a little colder during the day or when there are lots of low clouds that the sun would reflect off.
My photos shown above are all with clouds, which in my opinion is the best type of sunsets to enjoy. Having the clouds reflect the oranges, yellows and pinks of the sun before setting is truly magical. So if you are experiencing a cloudy or rainy day in Lugano, you may still be greeted with a sunset before the end of the day.
If you are a photographer like us, don’t forget your tripod to get some amazing photos and timelapses of the sunset.
