Can you drive the Furka Pass?
Yes! It’s one of the many scenic routes you can drive over instead of taking an alternative tunnel or different way around the mountains. As well as driving, it is also possible with a bike, motor or the public bus.

Is Furka Pass dangerous?
When there is low visability due to the clouds and rain, like our experience shared below, it can be dangerous. The road, like all other Swiss scenic passes, have tight bends, sharp angles and at times very sheer drops right next to the road.
If you are really scared of heights and not a confident driver on roads like this, keep this in mind when visiting the pass. There is always the public bus you can take instead to experience the Furka Pass.
Is the Furka Pass open?
This depends on the time of the year you are visiting, with the pass usually open from June to mid-October. However if the snowfall is melting sooner than expected. Check all up to date information here.
We love checking local webcams, which the Pass also has some to view!
When did Hotel Belvedere Furka pass close?
The Hotel Belvedere closed indefinitely back in 2016.
It boasts a rich heritage dating back to the late 19th century, combining classic architecture with modern amenities. Its tastefully decorated rooms and suites used to offer a comfortable haven for travellers seeking relaxation and indulgence while at the Furka Pass.
It was made famous by many things, with famous advertising for cars here, photoshoots and even the James Bond film Goldfinger.
These days you can still visit the area and parking spot, next to the restaurant nearby too. Here you can also see the Rhône Glacier up close!

Our Furka Pass Drive Experience
For our journey, we were driving from the West to East on a cloudy July day, so passing from the canton of Valais to the canton of Uri. For the day, it was unfortunately rainy and cloudy, but we stayed hopeful to be able to see the the road and scenic photos.

At the highest parts of the scenic pass, we were 100% in the clouds and rain. There was hardly any views to start with, but after a little drive on the pass the views were starting to be visible!

There were hardly any cars during our visit, which made it even more enjoyable since it’s usually one of the busiest scenic roads in Switzerland. We think due to the weather that many people avoided it during the time we drove here!
But despite the weather, we enjoyed the drive and took plenty of photos along the way. You of course had to be extra careful with the lack of visability at times.
The restaurant/facilities at the hotel spot was also closed. So no chance of a drink this time!
