Rent A Vintage Fiat 500 In Como

We’ve written this post based on our own experience renting a cute yellow Fiat 500 in Como during a sunny day in March 2024. We reserved the fiat with Macchinagialla Rent for 4 hours one Saturday morning and can already tell you it was an amazing experience and well worth it!

Our Fiat 500 Rental Experience

For a sunny Saturday morning, Dawid had planned this experience as a lovely surprise for me. We had always loved seeing the little Fiat’s around during travels in Italy and I didn’t know you could rent them. As a big fan of yellow coloured cars, Dawid had heard about the rental company and chose to reserve the yellow one for us!

It was very easy to rent last minute, with Dawid booking the experience just 1 day before. However we did enjoy this experience in March, so this is not at all a busy touristic period for Como. During Summer time, we can expect that you need to reserve in advance for this.

Dawid had basically left me at the local park in Como while he went off somewhere and told me to wait. Since it was a surprise, I really had no idea what it could be. I was trying to guess that maybe we’d be taking a little boat tour on Lake Como or some experience in the city. But when he turned up in the tiny little yellow car, I was incredibly speechless and excited!!

He had picked up the car from the company at the main train station of Como. He had to learn of course how to use it (it’s manual so it was very easy for him to pick it up) and drive a few circles with someone from the company to be sure that knew what to do and how to start it.

We decided to drive itinerary plan B (see below for the details). Sitting in the car driving around was a really cool experience. It definitely had others looking at us out of curiosity and fun! If I saw this drive past, I would be looking too!

Rental Price For The Fiat 500

For our own rental day, we paid just under 200 EUR for a total of 4 hours. We think this was a great price, compared to the amount of fun and enjoyment we got out of this. It was really fun, with great weather and a nice drive along the lake, despite itinerary plan A not available for us.

Fun to know

The Fiat has no seatbelts. This is since it was made so long ago that it was not a requirement when manufactured. So you should be responsible when driving.

The Fiat has no built in stereo. We love having a drive with music on, but there was a bluetooth speaker inside that you could connect to. So stick on some Italian playlist for the full Como experience.

The Fiat is super small! from the outside you of course can see how small it is, but when you are sat inside, you feel even smaller compared to all the normal, bigger cars on the road. You can really pass cyclists very easily and squeeze into little parking spots.

There was only one wing mirror on the outside, on the drivers side on the left! Not sure why, maybe it was normal design, but the right side had no mirror.

The Fiat is manual, so for those who are only used to automatic rentals you should keep this in mind when renting. We think this is not hard, but if you’re not used to it you may struggle.

There is a little sunroof you can open, which was perfect for our sunny day!

lake Como Fiat 500 Itineraries

You have the car for the rental period hours total, so there’s only so far you can travel with it. The company does provide a few suggested routes on their website, which is great for those who don’t know the area well. We know Lake Como pretty well, since we live in Lugano just a short drive away, so Dawid had a nice idea for the drive in the Fiat 500.

Itinerary Plan A

Our chosen plan A route was to head North from Como, along the lake on the left and then to take the boat (at Ferry station Cadenabbio Griante) to Bellagio and then drive back down to Como on the other side of the lake. While already driving North, I was still surprised with happiness that I was enjoying the drive as a passenger!

This whole route would take around 1 hour and 20 minutes, with the boat crossing included. This is 65KM in distance only.

Unfortunately for us, since we were renting in March, the boat was not yet operating for car transport to Bellagio on that day. So this itinerary is perfect for when they do!

However we have done this route before with our own car, and it’s very easy to take the boat with your car across Lake Como. When you arrive at the docking platform for the boats, there is always a ticket office where you can buy a single or return tickets with your car details (model/number plate needed only). So if you also rent a car like the Fiat 500, it’s easy to take across the water too!

Itinerary Plan B

So for our plan B, we simply drove all the way up from Como all the way to Cadenabbia and stopped for an Italian lunch on the lakeside promenade. It was possible we could have gone all the way up to Mennagio too, but wanted to enjoy a nice lunch for our Saturday and took it easy in the sunshine. We also enjoyed a coffee break at a little place along the road too!

For parking, with such a small car it’s very easy. However parking in general around Lake Como can be a nightmare, especially in the Summer. We suggest that you always have EUR coins with you for the parking meters, as many of them do not accept card at all. Some also have an app you can use otherwise to pay for your parking (which links to your credit card), but EUR coins is definitely the most efficient.

TIP: For those interested, Villa Carlotta is also on this route along Lake Como and you could stop here for a visit!

Summary

Our rental day with a Fiat 500 in Como was a truly amazing experience. It was fun, exciting to drive and we think as a unique experience for Como. It is something we would 100% definitely do again, next time for itinerary plan A with the boat to Bellagio. So we look forward to doing this during the Summer.

We had really great communication (in English and Italian) with the team behind the company. They were really friendly, considerate and even helped us out via whatsapp within no time during the 4 hours when we had a question during the experience about the car.
